Older people with low levels of bicarbonate, an ingredient that is found in baking soda, have a 24 percent higher risk of premature death, scientists have discovered in recent research at the University of Utah.
The results, published in the journal Clinical Journal of the American Nephrology showed that increasing the levels of bicarbonate can prolong life.
A team of scientists investigated how changes in pH, carbon dioxide and bicarbonate are associated to the life of healthy older people. The researchers analyzed data from 2,287 participants in the survey with which they started back in 1997.
